Media Release: CBR Screen Attraction Fund Officially Opens for Applications

Screen productions from around Australia and the world can now apply for the CBR Screen Attraction Fund (CBRSAF). This new fund is a pilot scheme with $450,000 of funding available, providing support of up to 10% of a production’s local expenditure if they qualify.

The CBRSAF, an initiative by Screen Canberra and the ACT Government, was established to ensure that the region is competitive in attracting large-budget national and international film and television projects, which has a flow-on effect for the industry and local economy.

Monica Penders, CEO of Screen Canberra, says the ACT’s location incentive program will increase the region’s appeal to large productions and our local industry’s capacity.

“Canberra’s reputation as a diverse and accommodating filming location is growing, and we believe this fund will help to attract more big productions to our city,’ says Monica. “Not only is this a novelty for locals who get to see their hometown on the big screen, but funding programs such as this also have a real impact on the careers of local talent and the economy.

“Big productions provide opportunities to nurture the professional development of local cast, crew and post-production companies, as well as other screen production service providers who can participate in development. It creates employment opportunities and generates income for our local practitioners, not to mention the accommodation, hospitality and other services utilised by visiting productions. As a result, this fund will contribute to the growth and sustainability of Canberra’s screen industry and the ACT economy.”

Minister for Arts Tara Cheyne MLA says initiatives such as the CBRSAF will contribute to the strategies for the ACT outlined in artsACT’s Statement of Ambition.

“The Screen Attraction Fund will deliver a further incentive to attract large-scale screen productions to Canberra, and encourage growth in our local creative industries by creating jobs and increasing investment,” said Minister for Arts Tara Cheyne MLA. “The fund will allow us to attract new talent to the region, as well as create more opportunities for emerging artists and diverse voices.”

Applications for the CBRSAF must meet specific criteria, including a minimum of $2 million of Qualifying Australian Capital Territory Expenditure, and the production must budget for and engage local crew and/or cast.
